The history of our very own Fibrex® frame material dates back to the late 1950s when our parent company, the Andersen® Corporation, wasn’t completely satisfied with vinyl frames. While they were decay-resistant and extremely easy to maintain, they didn’t have enough structural integrity, given their high expansion and contraction rate.
Thirty years and multiple patents later, Andersen perfected the manufacturing process of Fibrex for our windows in 1992. Fast-forward to today, Fibrex remains the standard material used for our window frames. As its exclusive source in the region, Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming shares how it’s made.
Fibrex is made from 40% reclaimed wood fiber by weight and 60% proprietary polymer. Its wood composition comes from repurposing unused portions of Andersen wood window components. This is the reason our Fibrex frames are environmentally friendly – they help save almost 9 million board feet of lumber from harvesting since its first mass production.
We heat the wood fibers to extract all of its moisture. Once completely dried, we heat the polymers to a certain temperature before combining them with the wood contents. These two components bond and form a new compound. The unique combination of these materials lends Fibrex the superior strength of wood and the moisture repellence of vinyl, making every window replacement project a success.
We use an innovative extruder to set the mixture in virtually any shape. It enables us to customize all of our Fibrex frames, sashes and grilles. During this process, we also apply any color upon the request of our customers. To date, we offer nearly 50 different interior-exterior color combinations to bring all conceivable window design to life.
Thanks to Fibrex, you can rest easy knowing your casement, double-hung or bay window will stand the test of time.
