Rooms Where Double-Hung Windows Work Best

Choosing windows on a room-by-room basis is an unwritten rule. Home areas are unique and so are glass units. Room-window pairings shouldn’t just be about aesthetics because form should always follow function.

As far as double-hung windows are concerned, Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming believes that, from a functional standpoint, these rooms can benefit the most:

Living Room

Sash units look at home in the living room simply because it faces the street. If your home is of a traditional style, chances are that the double-hung window is consistent with its aesthetics. Since the design elements featured in the facade are the most visible and the biggest contributors to curb appeal, a historically accurate window choice accentuates architectural authenticity.

The living room often accounts for most of the indoor living space, so it’s a natural destination for large windows. But if double-hung units aren’t known for their size, using them in your home’s primary room isn’t necessarily a bad idea. This is particularly true when there’s no scenic view to capture with oversized glass.

Bedroom

Double-hung windows can also work wonders for bedrooms. They highlight uniformity when the same units are used in downstairs spaces. Despite their limited opening, they optimize stratified airflow within the area by capitalizing on the stack effect. This phenomenon occurs when the warm air naturally rises and is replaced by cold air. The benefits of stack ventilation is more pronounced the higher the ceiling is and the taller the windows are. Also, upstairs double-hung units are easy and safe to clean because they tilt inward.

But then again, they’re subject to safety considerations. While compliance with the building code may be more attainable with casement window systems, properly sized double-hung units should satisfy government requirements.

Dining Room

Oversized windows have little value in dining rooms, especially at night. In most cases, diners can make do with narrow sash units to enjoy ventilation during hot months and catch a glimpse of the starry sky. Without occupying too much wall area, double-hung windows wouldn’t compete with artwork for space.
