How to Spot Broken Window Seals

Even if your home is fitted with modern windows with thermally sealed glazing, they’re still subject to slow deterioration over time. This won’t immediately happen with proper care and maintenance, and if they’re made and installed by reputable companies like Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming. It’s still important to know the tell-tale signs so you’ll know what to do when you have problems with one of your double hung windows.

How the Glass Is Sealed

Although single-pane windows have been around for a long time, they don’t really use any modern sealing. When the putty starts to fail over time, the glass becomes loose within the frames. But with modern windows, they’re sealed when two or three layers of glass are assembled and separated by either a partial vacuum or being filled with an inert gas like krypton or argon. This makes them insulated glass units (IGUs).

Checking for Failed Window Seals

First, you need to thoroughly clean both the inside and the outside of your casement window so you can be certain that you are not looking at external moisture and grime. When looking for window distortion, stand at a distance outside, and look at the reflection so that you’ll notice more easily if the glass is more distorted compared to the surrounding windows.

Window distortion is when the inert gas begins to leak out of the IGU, which sometimes makes the panes bend and collapse slightly in the center. So, if you notice such distortion on your window, then it usually means that seal failure has occurred. Luckily, it can still be replaced, so make sure to call a trusted window installer to get the job done professionally.
