How to Prepare Your Home for Spring Window Replacement

Spring is the perfect time to have your windows replaced, and this means making sure you have all the bases covered. You should, for example, prepare your home accordingly for the work ahead. This prevents unnecessary delays while ensuring the window installation will run safely and smoothly.

  1. Remove overhanging tree branches and shrubbery. Foliage is typically full and vivid during springtime, creating obstacles for your window installer. For this reason, make sure to cut back encroaching tree branches or shrubs near the windows to make the work area more accessible. Clear dust and pollen off the surfaces around your windows as well. Otherwise, these can mix with the caulking and cause a number of issues later.
  2. Take down window treatments, and clear the window sill area. To avoid damage, make sure to remove any curtains or blinds from your windows. Take photos, plants and other knick-knacks from the area around your window sills, and move them somewhere else. If you can, clear any furniture away from the work area before your window replacement starts. Just don’t let them obstruct the way between your windows and the front door so your installer will have easier access.
  3. Deactivate your security system. If your security system has window sensors, turn it off before your window installer starts the job.
  4. Secure small children and pets. Keep your kids and pets away from the window installation area. Given how workers will be coming to and from your home carrying heavy materials and equipment, it pays to keep the little ones secure in a room where they can safely play and stay until the work has finished.

One other thing – make sure you and your sliding window installer are on the same page about protecting your home from unnecessary mess and damage. At Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming, for example, we lay down tarps in the work area and use the appropriate footwear to keep your floors intact. We also clean as we go to ensure we leave your home cleaner than when we found it.
