Exploring Your Window Trim Choices

Many homeowners regard interior trim as an ornament that helps hide imperfections. This component, however, is much more than that. Your choice of window trim, also known as casing, is important to your home’s overall design.

Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming, your local window contractor, recommends the following interior trim designs that will help you get the most out of your beautiful replacement window units.

More About Casings

The casing is molding or trim that goes around the exterior and interior part of a window’s frame. Outside, its function is to seal the frame to the home, blocking cold air and moisture from entering your interior. Inside, it provides a finishing touch to a window installation the same way door moldings and baseboards give the room its aesthetic appeal. Casings often match the moldings to give the home’s interior and exterior its cohesive look.

Casing Types

Depending on the home’s architectural style, casings can come in different designs and configurations. These are the following:

  • Complete Casing. It is composed of moldings that surround the four sides of replacement windows. Such casings can have a simple layer of molding or multiple layers of stacked moldings to give the units their decorative charm.

  • Low-Profile Casing. This type of window trim lays flat against the exterior siding or the interior walls, tying the window to the home visually.

  • High-Profile Casing. Available in a variety of options, it can either surround the window or serve as a pediment above it. Its intricate design makes it a perfect fit for traditional homes.

  • Modern Casing. This window trim is very minimalistic. Unlike other types of casings that stand out, this type tends to blend in with the window.
