The Effects of Cold Weather on Windows and Doors

Winter has arrived, a little late, but at long last. The days have become shorter, frigid temperatures have set in, and ice and snow will become more prevalent. Few homeowners, on the other hand, are aware of the damage that the cold season may cause to their windows and doors. They may be unaware of the long-term effects of weather on windows and doors, which can result in premature replacement.

Here are a few of the issues to keep an eye out for this season.

1. Shrinking and Warping

Temperature and humidity can degrade the structural integrity of certain materials, especially wood. Wooden window and door frames can shrink in the excessive cold and warp or bend in extreme humidity. So, wood needs to be painted or sealed frequently. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and aluminum windows do not deform as much as wood windows, making them more popular nowadays.

2. Condensation

Condensation on the inside of your windows during the winter is frequently an indication of good energy efficiency. Heat and humidity in your home might cause condensation if they are unable to exit via your windows – as they should. If the condensation is significant, use a dehumidifier to lower the humidity in your home. Adequate ventilation will also help. Condensation between the panes of a double- or triple-pane window indicates an issue with the glass or the window itself.

3. Ice Buildup

Ice forms in cracks around doors and windows and their frames; therefore, weatherstripping must be regularly cleaned or replaced by a reliable window contractor. Warm moist air escapes via these holes and freezes when it comes in contact with cold air. This makes it difficult to open windows without harming the weatherstripping, leading to greater ice buildup. This can make opening and closing your door difficult.

4. Hardware Failure

Every door and window is equipped with a variety of operational hardware, such as latches, handles, hinges and other mechanisms that ensure that they operate properly. Ice and cold weather can cause damage or jamming to any of this gear.

5. Drafts

Old, poorly fitting, or inadequately insulated windows and doors are the most common source of drafts. While replacing or adding weatherstripping can assist, most problems require a new door or window.
