One of the many reasons why many homeowners steer clear of patio doors is because they believe that criminals can use them to gain access to their homes. However, if you avoid these common security mistakes, your French or sliding patio doors can be as secure as your entry doors and even your windows.
Patio doors provide a seamless connection between your indoor and outdoor living spaces. As such, they’re better off installed adjacent to your deck, patio or yard. It is never a good idea to have them placed on the side of your home that’s visible from the curb. This is especially if you have sliding glass doors, which show off much of your home’s interior.
Many window replacement projects involve the use of multi-pane windows that offer better energy efficiency and security. So, if you are going to invest in patio doors, disregard the ones with only one glass pane. They’re relatively easier to break into than those with multiple panes, which can defeat the purpose of having locks.
Patio doors must have the same level of hardware security as your front door. Choose one with better latches – multi-point latches for hinged French doors or reach-out latches for sliding doors. These are harder to open forcefully compared to single latch and other simple patio door latches.
At Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming, we offer patio doors with Andersen®-designed security hardware. They’re easy to operate and extremely durable, and create a snug, weathertight seal when the doors are closed. Our traditional hinged French doors employ strong hinges with a unique five-point locking system spanning the height of the door sash. Our sliding glass patio doors feature a reach-out locking system that pulls the sash into the jamb that effectively seals the door for better security and energy-efficiency.
