Curtain Tips for a More Beautiful Bay Window

A bay window is easily one of the most impressive-looking windows you can have in your home. However, you may want to use curtains to further enhance not just its looks but also its functionality. Our window replacement experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming have a few tips on properly using curtains on this type of window.

Curtain Tips for a More Beautiful Bay Window

Hang Those Curtains High

Bay windows are bigger than your usual casements and double hung windows. Hanging a curtain just at the same level as its top edge will make those curtains look short and underwhelming. For best results, add a bit of extra height to your curtains. Keep it as close to the ceiling as possible, about an inch from the edge at the highest.

Pick Colors According to Purpose

Do you want to bring more attention to your bay window or the curtains themselves? For the first one, you want to look for colors that match the wall next to the window so that they don’t stand out too much. Otherwise, feel free to pick colors that will contrast with the walls and the bay window’s frame color.

Avoid Short Curtains

A bay window’s size will make curtains look smaller than they appear. To avoid this, make sure that the bottom edge of the curtain is almost as low as the floor or even more. In fact, some curtain puddling on the floor (about four inches extra) is considered ideal for a modern bay window.

Use Multiple Curtains

A casement or sliding window will look fine with just a single long curtain. However, a bay window’s shape makes it so that multiple separate curtains will actually look and function better than single curtains. You can either have two individual curtains on both sides of the window or three for each window panel, whichever you prefer.
